To grants students a hands-on experience about legal proceedings The Faculty of Law at the University of Dubai hosted a real arbitration case session attended by a number of students in the Master of Law program and a group of people interested in arbitration law. An arbitration hearing regarding a commercial lawsuit pertaining to the termination of a contract was organized during the lecture, in spite the fact that arbitration hearings are usually held privately, unless the two arbitration parties agreed otherwise, given that arbitration is considered a tool to settle disputes. The arbitration session was opened by Dr. Mohammed Ghazi Rababaía, University of Dubai who thanked the two participant arbitration parties: representatives of Bin Sifan Lawyers (Claimant) and representatives of Dar Al Huqooq Lawyers (defendant), in addition to Mr. Zakaria Abdulalim, the single arbitrator assigned by Dubai Courts, for choosing the University of Dubai to hold the arbitration hearing, and agreeing on holding a public hearing. The lecture granted students a practical and hands-on experience to learn about court proceedings in the first arbitration hearing during which the arbitration terms of reference document is discussed and signed. Dr. Rababaía Said: ìThis lecture provided students in the Master of Law program with an excellent opportunity to learn about the practical procedures of arbitration and have a closer look at the atmosphere during this type of hearing sessionsî. ìThis type of hearing sessions grants law students the knowledge they need to handle similar arbitration lawsuits and get familiar with the rules and procedures, since they are universally adopted. Through adopting the idea of holding real arbitration hearing session as part of the international arbitration program for disputes resolution, we aim to improve the quality of education at the Universityî, said Dr. Harold Coaster, Dean of the Faculty of Law. The arbitrator started the hearing session, allowing each party to present the lawsuit and defenses, and then presented the arbitration terms of reference document to both party for discussion, to be signed by representatives of the two parties. The number of arbitration centers in the UAE is constantly growing, since courts are encouraging disputing parties to seek arbitration. The most renowned center is Dubai International Arbitration Center, a Dubai Chamber initiative. The Center aims to share knowledge and expertise regarding international commercial arbitration, through practical and interactive methods to settle and resolve commercial disputes.
